Monasteries of Madagascar and the Indian Ocean [May 2026]

General Meeting

Project #26M053

The Conference of Monasteries of Madagascar and the Indian Ocean (CMOI) has existed since 2008 and brings together 19 female monastic communities (from Madagascar, Mauritius, and Réunion) belonging to various orders (Benedictines, Poor Clares, and Carmelites).

The Conference aims to promote the contemplative life among the region's monasteries and to foster collaboration between them. The contemplative life is enriched by diverse charisms, and the training sessions the communities attend together help them remain faithful to their calling and support one another. These communities are few in number across a vast region and within Churches that are still young. Most of the communities are themselves young and feel a need for training and mutual support. The Conference offers training sessions. It is guided by the Benedictine superior of Mahitsy and the Cistercian superior of Maromby.

Project:

The association's general assembly is meeting at the Tulear monastery (Madagascar). The participants will review the statutes and internal regulations, and elect a new president and her board.

Financial assistance: 5,000 euros
