Number of main monastic communities
in Africa, Latin America and Asia
The foundation of monasteries in Africa, Latin America and Asia, begun in the 19th century, increased greatly during the 1960’s. During those years, almost 4 or 5 new communities were founded every year, for a total of some 200 new foundations in 40 years

In 2005, there are 162 communities mainly in Brazil (80), in Mexico (18)
